More and funnier trash cans

It doesn´t matter where you are, wherever you go you see trash on the ground. Between 8 and 13-million-tons of trash ends up in nature every year according to Naturskyddsföreningen. Because humans are lazy and throw trash everywhere, but why?

This problem can be solved if there are more trash cans. And if the trash cans are more colourful and fun, they will be more noticeable for people.

In big cities like New York it´s common to see rats on the streets. The rats are drawn to the trash, because they can find food easily there. Rats are pests and destroys things like electric cables. Rats are also good spreaders of diseases. Other animals than rats are likewise drawn to the trash to find food. But the rubbish isn't always good for the animals, for example chewing gum. The animals can get sick and in the worst-case scenario, die. The diseases can be spread further and infect people, like the coronavirus. If there are more garbage cans, it reduces the risk of disease spreading.

Just because trash is thrown on the ground doesn´t mean it stays there. The trash can be transported from land to sea by rain, winds and other watercourses. If it´s plastic items, it becomes complicated because plastic objects decompose into microplastics in the sea. Mechanical attrition and sunlight are the reason why it´s possible for plastic objects to become microplastics. The microplastics are smaller than 5 mm. (Stockholms universitet, 2017).

The trash has a negative impact on the marine life and the ocean generally. The animals get hurt and coral reef get damaged. We humans use the water in the seas as drinking water. Then imagine what all the rubbish can do with the drinking water. In the future it´s possible that the water is too polluted to be used as drinking water. What do we do then?

Someone might say that it´s unnecessary and waste of money to invest in trash cans. That it´s much more important things to spend money on.

An investment in trash cans is important, it can lead to a future for us to live in. It doesn´t cost much to invest in more and funnier trash cans. Many artists are certainly interested in designing some trash cans. More rubbish cans mean they don´t have to empty as often and with that money can be saved. Less garbage collection means the garbage trucks don´t have to drive as much and therefor the exhaust gases decrease.

More and funnier trash cans can contribute to a clearer future.
